About the forum
The World Jackal Day was initiated in the year 2023 to communicate recent findings to the broad public and help connect researchers to support collaboration. The World Jackal Day Scientific Forum brings together researchers, wildlife professionals, conservation practitioners, students and institutions interested in the ecology, distribution, monitoring and management of jackals. The programme will include:
- country updates on current developments
- research highlights and ongoing projects
- monitoring and methodological approaches
- discussion of management, conservation and policy issues
- opportunities for exchange and networking within the international jackal research community
Focus species:
Canis aureus, Canis lupaster, Canis latrans, Canis simensis, Lupulella adusta, Lupulella mesomelas, Lycalopex culpaeus
and other related canids
Who should attend?
This meeting is intended for:
- researchers working on jackal ecology, behaviour, genetics, distribution or conservation
- wildlife managers and practitioners
- experts involved in monitoring and data collection
- students and early-career scientists
- institutions and organisations with an interest in jackal populations and management
Participation is open to both presenters and attendees without a presentation.
Agenda:
The forum will feature a blend of short presentations, discussion and networking. We aim to cover a broad spectrum of topics related to jackal ecology, conservation strategies, monitoring and research methodologies.
Special attention will be given to the question: What’s new in your country/ institution/ working group?
This includes recent developments in population status, distribution, management practice, conservation measures, policy context and research progress.
Call for Contributions (limited slots available):
We would be delighted if you could contribute to the program with a short talk of 10 minutes. Your presentation could focus on:
- Latest News: Updates and news from your country regarding jackal populations, conservation efforts, or policy changes.
- Research Highlights: New findings or preliminary results from your current research projects on jackals.
Proceedings Book:
We invite you to publish a short note on your recent findings! ….submit an abstract, which will be published in the Proceedings (max. one page with appr. 300-500 words and 1-2 figures max.)
The scientific committe will send you feedback on your abstract.
Deadline for registration and abstract submission extended to 17.04.2026
Your expertise and insights would be a valuable addition to our meeting, and we sincerely hope you will consider joining us. Together, we can work on a greater understanding and appreciation for jackals, contributing to research globally.
For any inquiries or further information, please do not hesitate to contact me directly. We look forward to the possibility of welcoming you to the meeting, I will be happy to see you there! jennifer.hatlauf@boku.ac.at
