In the shelter of humans: how the golden jackal is spreading across Europe

A recent study in Nature Ecology & Evolution shows that golden jackals gain a foothold where living close to people shields them from wolves – a key to their rapid spread across the continent.

Ranc et al. (2026): “Human shielding from wolves facilitates jackal expansion across Europe”. Nature Ecology & Evolution 10(6): 1091–1102.

Your input matters

Your observation supports research!

The golden jackal is spreading across Europe – often unnoticed. Observations from the public are a valuable source of data: they show where the species occurs and help us document its long-term development.

A photo, a camera-trap image, a track or a howl in the night – every clue counts.
