A day for the jackals of the world

World Jackal Day puts the spotlight on this fascinating group of animals and their close relatives – with the latest findings on diet, use of space and behaviour, and on how people and animals live alongside each other. The date deliberately coincides with the start of the golden jackal’s birth season in Europe, when the new generation is born.

Background

On almost every continent there is an animal traditionally known as a “jackal”. Even though modern scientific studies show that they are less closely related than once thought, they all have one thing in common: they are small to medium-sized canids that look and behave in similar ways.

Wherever they occur, they play an important role not only in human folklore and myth but also in the ecosystem. Today these animals are the subject of a great deal of research – some have expanded their range remarkably in recent years, while others may be declining. The international day of jackals highlights this group of animals and brings new information on every aspect of these fascinating animals each year.
